Your windshield has many safety functions. Not only does it protect you from road debris, but it keeps you from being thrown in the event of an accident. It also keeps the roof from caving in if the vehicle rolls over. You can put a new windshield on your 1968 Dodge pickup right from home with a few supplies from your local auto parts store. Be sure to replace the windshield if you have any cracks longer than 6 inches.
Tools Used: Damp towel, Gasket, Replacement windshield, Sealant, Heavy nylon cord, Petroleum jelly, Work gloves
Put Windshield
Wipe off any rust and debris from the pickup's windshield opening. Rub the new gasket with a towel to remove the sealant then place it in the sun to soften up.
Wrap the new gasket around the windshield, making sure that the slotted side of the gasket faces outside the vehicle. Run a bead of sealant along the bottom part of the gasket.
Wipe petroleum jelly into the outer groove on the gasket. Put a little extra at the top and bottom center. Run a heavy nylon cord around the outer groove, starting at the bottom center and leaving two long ends of cord hanging out.
Instruct an assistant to place the windshield in the opening from outside the truck while you guide the nylon cords onto the dashboard from inside the truck.
Pull one cord end out and around the windshield frame. This will bring the rubber lip of the gasket into place. At the same time, ask your helper to press the rubber gasket around the outside edge of the windshield. Allow the sealant to dry for 48 hours before moving the vehicle.
