The security system on a 1996 Oldsmobile 88 is controlled by the body control module (BCM). The BCM actively monitors the security system to ensure that it is operating properly. When the BCM detects a problem with the security system, it stores a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) in its internal memory and illuminates the security light in the gauge cluster. An automotive scan tool is required to clear the DTCs from the BCM's memory and reset the security system.
Step 1 Shift the Oldsmobile's transmission into park and turn off the engine. Apply the parking brake and turn the ignition back to the "On" position.
Step 2 Locate the diagnostic data port underneath the dashboard, just below the steering wheel.
Step 3 Connect the scan tool's data transfer cable to the vehicle's diagnostic data port. Turn on the scan tool and follow the on-screen instructions to input the vehicle's engine and transmission information.
Step 4 Select "BCM" from the scan tool's main menu. Choose "Codes," then choose "Clear all current and stored DTCs."
Wait for the scan tool to indicate that the codes have been cleared. Unplug the scan tool, start the engine and verify that the security light on the dashboard is not illuminated. The security system is now reset.
