1967 Ford Mustang Backup Light Installation Instructions

In 1967, backup lights were still a relatively new safety feature on automobiles. The 1967 Mustang did feature backup lights, but unlike those on modern cars, the backup lights and the taillights were separate assemblies. The 1967 Mustang's backup lights are particularly vulnerable to damage, as they are mounted within the rear valance panel. Fortunately, replacement backup lights for the 1967 Mustang are readily available, and installing a backup light is fairly simple.

Tools Used: Wrench, Backup light gasket, Replacement backup light

Install Backup Light

Open the 1967 Mustang's luggage compartment and pull the side of the trunk mat toward the center of the trunk.

Disconnect the backup light's wiring harness from the main wiring harness inside the trunk. The light's wiring harness enters the trunk through a rubber grommet between the side of the trunk and the rear quarter panel. Trace the light's wiring harness to a rubber connection, then pull the two sides of the connection apart.

Push the light's rubber grommet though the inner panel, then push the light's wiring harness through the hole left by the grommet's removal.

Remove the two nuts on the back of the backup light from underneath the car with a wrench, then push the light out of the lower valance panel.

Position a new backup light gasket onto the back of the replacement backup light, then position the new assembly onto the lower valance panel.

Install and tighten the light's two retaining nuts with a wrench.

Route the light's wiring harness into the trunk from underneath the car, then press the grommet that surrounds the light's wire into the trunk's inner panel.

Plug the backup light's wiring harness into the Mustang's main wiring harness.

Unfold the trunk mat to conceal the wire.
