How to Remove Front Clip on 1967 Chevrolet Camaro

To remove the front clip from a 1967 Camaro, it is helpful to first understand what constitutes the parts which make up the front clip. The hood, front bumper, core support and the inner and outer fenders on both the driver's and passenger side of the car make up this component. Whether repairing accident damage or restoring the car, it is often helpful to remove the front clip, particularly when repairing or cleaning hard-to-reach places on the engine.

Tools Used: 1/2-inch drive socket set, Philips screwdriver

Instructions

Locate and remove the mounting screws which secure the headlights of the 1967 Camaro to the grille. Unplug their connector wires. On the grille, recessed approximately 1/4 inch, you will find the screws which mount the grille to the nose of the car. Remove these screws, then pull the grille out of the grille cover of the vehicle. Unbolt the car's fog lamps by removing the fittings which secure them from underneath the bumper, then unbolt the bumper itself by unbolting the bumper brackets located on the frame and accessible from under the Camaro.

Use the 1/2-inch drive socket set to remove the lower air dam. By looking underneath the car, you will see four bolts which secure the air dam to the core support in the center and the air dam to the fenders on either side.

Unbolt the hood of the Camaro by using the socket wrench to remove the bolts securing the back of the hood to the hood hinges. Have an assistant hold the hood while you unbolt it, then remove the hood. Disconnect and unbolt the washer bottle, battery tray and coolant reservoir from the inside of the engine compartment. These parts are bolted to the inner fenders and must be removed to access and remove the fenders.

Unbolt the inner fenders from outside the car by reaching into the wheel well with the socket wrench and unbolting the fasteners which secure the inner fender to the outer fender and the car's frame. Pull the inner fender out through the wheel well when the bolts have been removed. Use the same procedure to remove the opposite inner fender.

Open the driver's and passenger's side doors of the car. Look past the hinges in the door and you will see the bolts which mount the outer fenders to the body of the vehicle. Remove these bolts on both sides of the car. To remove the bolts which mount the fender to the nose piece of the Camaro, reach in to the wheel well toward the front of the car where the front of the fender and the nose piece of the car meet. There are three bolts here to be removed on each side of the car. Finally, remove the bolts which you will find on the inner lip of the fender. These secure the fender to the fender support of the frame.

Pull the loosened fenders off the Camaro, then unbolt the nose piece from the core support by removing the bolts located to the left and the right of the hood latch. Remove the bolts from underneath the car which secure the lower part of the nose piece to the core support, then lift the nose piece up and off of the core support.

Drain the engine coolant by disconnecting the lower radiator hose. When the coolant has stopped flowing, remove the upper radiator hose from between the engine and the radiator by unscrewing the compression band with a screwdriver. There are two bolts which secure the core support and radiator to the front frame horns of the car, accessible from underneath the automobile. Remove these bolts with the socket wrench, then have an assistant help lift the core support off of the frame rails.

Unbolt the fender support rails from the body of the car. The fender support rails are located at the driver's and passenger side of the car's firewall at the back of the engine compartment. The hood hinges are mounted beside these support rails. Remove the support rails to complete the removal of the front clip of the car.

Tips & Warnings

Use plastic baggies labeled with the location of the fittings you have removed. This is to safely store and divide the nuts and bolts to make reassembly easier later on.
