On 1972 Triumph Bonneville motorcycles, gravity helps fuel travel to the float chambers of the carburetors. Two fuel taps, with a built-in gauze filter, are located one each side beneath the rear end of the fuel tank. For normal running, the right-hand tap alone should be opened (via manual switch on tap) except under high-speed and racing conditions. The left-hand tap is used to provide a reserve supply when the main contents of the fuel tank are exhausted. The left-hand tap should be opened during racing conditions because the fuel pick-up inside the tank is at a better location for fuel delivery during aggressive turning and braking.
