How to Remove the Ignition Switch on a 1956 Chevrolet

Chevrolet completely redesigned and re-engineered its cars for the 1955 model year. Styling was much more modern than the previous year's models. A new frame was used and was lighter and stiffer than before. The introduction of Chevrolet's first mass produced V-8 also coincided with the 1955 redesign. The basic platform and body carried over to the 1956 models, but styling was changed enough that one could tell the difference between the models at a glance. The ignition switch in these cars was operated by a key and turned the ignition on, as well as activated the starter motor. Replacement of a worn ignition switch should take only a few minutes.

Tools Used: Ignition key, Small paper clip

Remove the Ignition Switch

Insert the key into the ignition switch and turn it to the "LOCK" position.

Straighten out a small paper clip.

Insert one end of the paper clip into the small hole in the face of the ignition switch right under the key.

Jiggle the paper clip while pulling out on the key gently to work the ignition switch from the lock cylinder.

Remove the key from the old switch and discard it or place it aside.

Tips & Warnings

To install a replacement ignition switch, line up the slot in the barrel of the switch with the boss in the lock cylinder. Push the switch into the cylinder until it clicks into place. Insert the key into the new ignition switch and test all of its functions.
