The ignition switch in a 1975 Oldsmobile is how you turn the car over every time you want to start it. Over time, after thousands of starts, the physical connections in the switch itself can wear out. Fortunately, you can replace the switch yourself, and it should take less than 30 minutes to do it.
Tools Used: Open-end wrench set, 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set, Phillips screwdriver
Remove an Ignition Switch
Sit in the driver's seat. Lock the steering wheel in place so that both wheels are pointing forward. Put the key in the ignition and turn it so that it's in the "Lock" setting.
Pop the hood. Disconnect the negative terminal on the battery with an open-end wrench. Remove the trim pieces around the instrument panel using an open-end wrench. Unbolt the steering column from the dashboard using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Unplug the shift indicator cable with your hands.
Unplug the dimmer switch plug as well as the ignition switch plug using your hands. Unscrew the screw from the vehicle using the Phillips screwdriver, then pull it away from the Oldsmobile.
