The 1979 Dodge pickup has multiple belts driving the accessories classified as "V" belts. On the Dodge pickup, the accessory itself is the tensioning device. The process for the removal of a singular belt depends on its location in progression on the crankshaft pulley. The V belt requires replacement if cracks can be seen on the inside of the belt or if it squeals due to glazing from the introduction of oil onto the belts surface.
Tools Used: Ratchet, Set of sockets
Replace Drive Belt
Loosen the air conditioning compressor bolts with a 15mm socket. Push the air compressor away from the belt to loosen the tension on the belt.
Loosen the alternator bottom bolt using a 15mm socket. Loosen the top adjuster bolt using a socket and push the alternator in toward the engine. This will relax the tension and allow removal of the belt.
Move the power steering pump by using a socket to loosen all the bolts in its support bracket. There are three bolts in the front and one in the back. When all the bolts are loosened, push the power steering pump in toward the engine.
Replace these belts in the same manner that they were taken off with the exception that when the belts are replaced, the accessory must be pulled in the opposite direction to apply tension before tightening the bolts. The alternator is rotated counterclockwise, the air conditioner compressor counterclockwise and the power steering pump must go clockwise.
