Help With Replacing the Radiator on a Ford Focus

The radiator on your Ford Focus helps remove engine heat created by the combustion process. However, an old radiator on your Focus filled with calcium, lime and rust deposits will prevent it from removing heat as fast as required. This will cause your engine to overheat, affect the service life of the engine and, eventually, cause serious engine damage once the radiator is completely blocked. Replace the failing radiator on your Ford vehicle now to avoid costly repairs later.

Make sure the cooling system is cool to the touch; drain the cooling system. Remove the cooling-fan motor and shroud, the radiator deflector, and the upper radiator hose. Support the condenser and condenser oil cooler (if your particular model is equipped with them) so they don't fall after removing the radiator. For the next part of the process, work from underneath the vehicle and disconnect the lower radiator hose. If horn electrical connector is in the way, disconnect it and move it aside. Next, remove the radiator support bracket and remove the radiator from the vehicle. Follow the same procedure in reverse order when reinstalling the new radiator. Once you refill the system with coolant, consult your car owner’s manual to properly bleed the system.

Drain the cooling system and disconnect the wiring harness retaining clips from the cooling-fan shroud. Locate the lines attached to the air-conditioning condenser and disconnect them with a line wrench to prevent damaging the retaining nuts. You can then remove the upper radiator hose and the rest of the coolant hoses. Looking from underneath your Focus, you'll see a harness retaining clip on the radiator support bracket. Remove this clip and unplug the horn electrical connector. Use a piece of wire to secure the radiator and cooling-fan motor and shroud assembly. Once you remove the radiator support bracket, carefully remove the radiator, cooling-fan motor and shroud assembly from the vehicle and place on a workbench. Locate the retaining clips that hold the fan motor assembly to the radiator and remove them. Slide the fan motor and shroud assembly from the radiator. Follow the same procedure in reverse order when reinstalling the new radiator. Once you refill the system with coolant, consult your car owner’s manual to properly bleed the system.
