In 2006, the Toyota Camry was produced with two engine options. The most common engine was the 2.4-liter, four-cylinder, but the Camry was also offered with an optional 3.0-liter, six-cylinder powerplant. Changing the oil in the two engines is similar, but the location of the oil filter will differ. Toyota recommends changing the oil every 3,000 miles for either engine. The procedure to change the oil is relatively uncomplicated.
2.4-Liter Engine
Open the hood of the vehicle and locate the oil filter. It will be at the front of the engine above the exhaust manifold. Place the oil pan under the front of the vehicle, lining it up with the filter.
Loosen the oil filter using the oil filter wrench. Allow the oil to drain from the filter. Remove the filter using your hands when it has stopped draining.
Apply a thin coat of oil to the rubber gasket of the new oil filter using your fingers. Screw the filter on the filter stud until it is hand tight. Tighten the filter ¼-inch with the filter wrench.
Jack up the front of the vehicle and secure it with jack stands
Crawl beneath the vehicle and locate oil drain plug. It will be on the oil pan at the base of the engine. Place the oil drain pan under the drain plug. Loosen the oil drain plug using a combination wrench. Allow the oil to drain from the pan until no more comes from the pan. Replace the oil drain plug until it is hand tight. Snug the drain plug with a combination wrench.
Lower the vehicle to the ground. Open the oil filler cap at the top of the engine. Pour in 4 qts. of oil and pull the oil dipstick. Check the level of the oil on the dipstick. It should be near the top of the “safe” area of the dipstick. If not, add oil until it reaches that area.
Start the vehicle and allow it to run for a few minutes. Check under the vehicle for leaks. Turn the vehicle off and check the dipstick to make certain it is inside the “safe” area of the stick. If not, add oil until it reaches that area.
3.0-Liter Engine
Jack up the front of the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
Crawl beneath the vehicle and locate oil drain plug. It will be on the oil pan at the base of the engine. Place the drain pan under the drain plug. Loosen the oil drain plug using a combination wrench. Allow the oil to drain from the pan until no more comes from the pan. Replace the oil drain plug until it is hand tight. Snug the drain plug with a combination wrench.
Locate the oil filter. It is at the base of the engine behind the oil pan. Loosen the oil filter using the oil filter wrench and remove it.
Place a thin coat of oil around the gasket of the new oil filter. Screw the filter onto the filter stud until it is hand tight. Tighten the filter one-quarter of a turn using the filter wrench.
Lower the vehicle to the ground.
Open the oil filler cap at the top of the engine. Pour in 4 qts. of oil and pull the oil dipstick. Check the level of the oil on the dipstick. It should be near the top of the “safe” area of the dipstick. If not, add oil until it reaches that area.
Start the vehicle and allow it to run for a few minutes. Check under the vehicle for leaks. Turn the vehicle off and check that the oil level is inside the "safe" area of the dipstick. If not, add oil and recheck.
