How to Change the Oil in a 2002 Honda Odyssey

Honda released its first attempt at a minivan in the 1995 model year. This van, known as the Odyssey, shared a platform with the Honda Accord. The original Odyssey cam fitted with a 2.2-liter, in-line four-cylinder engine that churned out 140 horsepower. The 2002 version of the Honda Odyssey came equipped with a 3.5-liter V-6 that produced 240 horsepower, an impressive jump in less than 10 years. Part of maintaining the Odyssey involves changing the oil every 3,750 to 7,500 miles, depending on driving styles.

Open the Odyssey's hood and remove the oil filler cap from the top of the engine. Place the cap in a secure location.

Jack up the front of the Odyssey with a floor jack. Slide jack stands under the Odyssey's subframe and lower the van until only the jack stands support it.

Slide under the Honda and locate the oil pan -- the large metal pan at the bottom of the engine. Place the drain pan under the oil drain plug on the front of the oil pan. Remove the drain plug with the closed end of a combination wrench.

Allow the oil to drain from the engine until only slow drips remain. Clean the drain plug with a lint-free cloth and install a new metal washer on the drain plug. Hand-tighten the oil drain plug and snug it with the closed end of a combination wrench.

Locate the oil filter, the roughly 3-inch long cylinder to the passenger's side of the oil pan.

Slide the drain pan under the oil filter and loosen it with a ratchet, 6-inch extension and Honda tool No. 07912-6110001, oil filter cup. Once loose, allow the oil to drain from the filter and remove it by hand.

Clean the oil filter mount with a clean, lint-free cloth.

Place a small amount of new 5W-20 engine oil on the end of your finger and rub oil around the O-ring on the new oil filter. This prevents the O-ring from bunching up while tightening the filter.

Hand-tighten the oil filter onto the oil filter mount. Torque the oil filter to 16 foot-pounds with a torque wrench, 6-inch extension and the special Honda oil filter cup.

Raise the Odyssey from the jack stands using a floor jack, and remove the jack stands from under the Odyssey. Lower the Honda to the ground.

Insert a funnel into the oil filler hole on top of the Odyssey's engine and pour in 4.6 qts. of API-certified, 5W-20 engine oil.

Remove the oil dipstick from the engine and wipe the dipstick with a clean with a lint-free cloth, and reinsert the dipstick. Remove the dipstick and check that the level of the oil is near the top of the crosshatched section of the dipstick. Add engine oil as needed. Reinstall the oil filler cap.

Start the engine and allow it to run for three minutes. Shut the engine down, recheck and adjust the oil level according to the process in Step 12.

Close the Odyssey's hood.

Insert a funnel into one of the empty oil bottles and pour oil from the drain pan into the empty bottle. Repeat this step until the drain pan is empty.

Take the bottles of old oil and the oil filter to an automotive fluid recycling center. Many auto parts stores perform this task free of charge.
