How to Adjust the Rear Ride Height on a 1979 Chevrolet Corvette

The C3 model of Corvette was produced for model years 1968 through 1982. The rear suspension of a 1979 Corvette incorporates a 9-leaf rear spring assembly. Lowering the rear ride height of a C3 Corvette requires a longer spring bolt kit that is available from most Corvette parts suppliers. These extended bolts allow the owner to adjust the rear ride height by lowering or raising the adjustment nuts.

Tools Used: Tools, Tape measure, Jack, Jack stands, Lug wrench, Open end wrench set, Penetrating lubricant, Block of wood, C-clamp, 8-inch extended spring bolt kit

Adjust the Rear Ride Height

Park the car on a level flat surface. Measure the distance from the ground to the top of the wheel well for a reference point.

Raise the rear of the car with a hydraulic jack and place the car on jack stands for safety. Remove the rear wheels using a lug wrench.

Locate the rear leaf spring assembly. Use a c-clamp to attach a small block of wood to the bottom end of the spring. This will keep the jack from slipping against the surface of the spring.

Place a hydraulic jack on one side of the spring and lift it high enough to remove the pressure from the spring nut. Spray penetrating lubricant on the spring bolt and nut. Allow it to soak for 30 minutes. Remove the nut with an open end wrench and pull out the mounting bolt and bushings.

Replace the bolt with the longer 8-inch spring bolts, bushings, and nuts from your kit. Count the threads at the end of the bolt and match them on the opposite side. Repeat the process on the other side of the spring.

Remove the jack stands and lower the car. Measure the distance from the floor to the top of the rear wheel openings. Make any necessary changes by turning the adjustment nut on the new spring bolts.

Drive the car for about 250 miles to settle the suspension. Re-measure and adjust the ride height accordingly.
