How to Change the Oil Filter on a 1950 Chevrolet Deluxe Sedan

The 1950 Chevrolet Deluxe Sedan has an oil filter that requires a change every 3,000 miles to keep the oil fresh for as long as possible. Changing the oil filter should occur at the same time as changing the oil since they need to be changed with the same frequency. Keeping up with this regularly-scheduled maintenance prevents the engine from overheating and the gears from grinding. Changing the oil filter is a quick job that should take approximately 30 minutes.

Tools Used: 2 jack stands, Drain pan, Funnel, 3 quarts transmission oil

Change the Oil Filter

Lift the car up 8 to 16 inches on a pair of front jack stands. Wait until the engine is completely cool (not hot to the touch) before proceeding to Step 2.

Go beneath the front end of the sedan with a flashlight to locate the oil filter. This cylindrical, plastic piece is located next to the radiator approximately 6 inches deep in the engine. Put a drain pan under the oil filter.

Twist the oil filter counter-clockwise to remove it from the engine. Move out of the way while the oil drains into the drain pan.

Put a layer of fresh transmission oil on the rubber gasket that comes on top of the gasket.

Put the oil filter back on the engine and turn it a half turn to the right to fasten it in place securely.

Bring the car down from the jack stands and pop the hood. Pull out the black transmission oil dipstick and place a funnel in the tube. Pour in three quarts of transmission oil and close the hood.
