How to Remove A/C Compressor on 1979 Volkswagen Scirocco

The air-conditioning compressor is a pump that drives refrigerant through the components of the air-conditioning system. The compressor is located at the front of the Scirocco engine and has its own belt-tensioning system. The air-conditioning system must be drained of refrigerant before you can repair it, and this must be done by a professional shop. Do not attempt to empty the refrigerant yourself.

Tools Used: Wrench set, Pry bar

Remove A/C Compressor

Take your Scirocco to an air-conditioning repair shop and have them discharge refrigerant from the system. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Loosen the compressor pivot bolt followed by the adjusting bolt enough that you can slip the drive belt off.

Disconnect the clutch fan wiring harness from the compressor by squeezing the tabs with your fingers or a wrench.

Disconnect the high- and low-pressure refrigerant lines from the compressor using open-ended wrenches. Use plastic bags or aluminum foil to block off the hose ends to prevent dirt and contaminants from entering them.

Loosen and remove the compressor mounting bolts with a wrench. Remove the compressor.

Tips & Warnings

It's a good idea to replace the drier-receiver whenever you replace the compressor.

Take this opportunity to inspect all of the connections and components of the A/C system for leaks and aging or cracking hoses.

Always wear safety glasses when disconnecting the A/C hoses.
