How to Remove a Ignition Switch on a 1967 Buick Riviera

The 1967 Buick Riviera came equipped with a single dashboard-mounted ignition switch. Aside from starting the vehicle, the ignition switch may also be used to power the interior's electrical components, without having to start the engine. The ignition switch plugs into a thick wiring connection that contains all of the necessary wiring contacts, rather than featuring individual wire connections. If the switch fails to operate correctly, its metal contacts have most likely corroded. Removing the switch is a fairly straightforward procedure, but some minor disassembly is required.

Tools Used: Screwdriver, Paper clip

Remove a Ignition Switch

Open the ashtray, then depress the metal tab at the back of the interior of the ashtray and pull the ashtray out of the dashboard.

Remove the screws that secure the instrument panel molding to the instrument panel, using a screwdriver, then pull the molding off the instrument panel.

Remove the screws that secure the steering column's lower cover to the bottom of the steering column, then pull the cover off the column.

Remove the screws that secure the instrument panel's lower housing to the bottom of the instrument panel, using a screwdriver, then lift the housing off the instrument panel.

Insert the ignition key into the ignition switch and rotate the key to the accessory position.

Insert the tip of a bent paper clip into the small hole on the face of the ignition key's lock cylinder, then press the paper clip into the lock cylinder while simultaneously pulling the lock cylinder out of the ignition switch with the ignition key, to release both the lock cylinder and the ignition switch.

Unplug the wiring connector from the ignition switch.
