How to Remove the Steering Column on a 1980 Ford F-150

As a vehicle gets older, its components start to wear down, particularly those that are used frequently. The steering column has many internal components that can start to degrade; moreover, the tilt mechanism and the connection to the linkage can both become loose. In a 1980 Ford F-150, the best way to fix a loose column problem is to replace the it entirely with a rebuilt or a new column. The first step in this maintenance task is to remove the old steering column from the vehicle.

Tools Used: Open-end wrench set, Flat-head screwdriver, Phillips-head screwdriver, 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and socket set

Remove Steering Column

Push down the parking brake pedal to secure the vehicle. Pop the hood. Locate the connection between the steering column and the steering linkage, using an open-end wrench. Pull the linkage out of the column.

Remove the screws located at the base of the column, on the inside of the vehicle, using a Phillips-head screwdriver. Remove the steering column cover, using the Phillips-head screwdriver. Remove the shift indicator cable from the side of the column, using the flat-head screwdriver, if you own an automatic transmission vehicle.

Remove the surround for the gauge cluster, using the Phillips-head screwdriver. Unbolt the column support bracket from the pedal support bracket, using the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and socket. Unplug the wiring to the column, using your hands.

Lift the column up and away from the dashboard, then unbolt the column support bracket.
