How to Clean the AC Vents on a 1988 Ford Mustang

The Ford Mustang is an American icon, very popular among car enthusiasts. With origins in the 1960s, the model is going strong to this day. Older Mustangs obviously require a bit of special care, especially in models that are 20 years old or more. With the popular 1988 model (which came in LX or GT form), it's important to maintain the interior by routinely cleaning it, and this includes cleaning the air vents. Although cleaning the air vents of any car is not a fun task, with the proper tools and technique the job is actually much simpler than it seems.

This process does not require tools.

Clean the AC Vents

Wipe the exterior of the air vents with a damp cloth. You can also use a wipe specifically designed for car interiors such as Armor-All car wipes.

The air vents on the 1988 Mustang are essentially standard air vents and can be cleaned just as you would on any other car. Use a long bristled brush to clean inside the air vents. Gently insert the brush into the vent, push down slightly and pull it outward. This pulls the dust into the vehicle instead of pushing it back into the air conditioner. Make sure that the brush you use does not shed hairs, as this defeats the purpose of cleaning.

Start the car and turn on the air conditioning at the highest setting. Allow it to blow for approximately 60 seconds and shut the car off. This will blow out any dust and debris that is located deeper inside the vent. It will come out anyway the next time you turn the air conditioning on, so you may as well do this while you are cleaning it.

Wipe the exterior of the air vent with a damp cloth to remove any debris or dust blown out from the interior of the air vent.
