How to Change the Gas Filler on a 1987 Honda Accord

The fuel filler on a 1987 Honda Accord is the rubber tube that connects the gas cap to the gas tank. This filler neck is made of rubber and steel, and over time, the rubber can break down. Should this happen, then whenever you fill up with gas, the fuel will spill onto the ground. To fix the issue, you need to change out the gas filler. This project will take just under an hour to complete.

Tools Used: Jack, Jack stands, Wheel chocks, Flat-head screwdriver, 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and socket set, Wood block, Replacement gas filler

Change the Gas Filler

Place wheel chocks in front and behind the front wheels of your 1987 Accord. Lift the rear end of the car with a jack. Place jack stands under the jack points forward of the rear wheels.

Open the fuel tank door and remove the gas cap. Unbolt the gas filler from the body with a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Put the wood block on the head of the jack and lift up the jack so it contacts the bottom of the gas tank.

Unbolt the gas tank straps from the chassis with the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets. Lower the tank down approximately 6 inches with the jack to gain access to the filler neck. Remove the gas filler hoses from the gas tank with the flat-head screwdriver and the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Pull the gas filler off of the tank and the gas door.

Install the replacement gas filler onto the gas tank with the flat-head screwdriver and the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Lift the gas tank with the jack and bolt it back in place with the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets.

Bolt the gas filler neck to the body with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Reinstall the gas cap and shut the gas door. Raise the vehicle off the jack stands with the jack. Remove the jack stands and lower the Accord to the ground.

Tips & Warnings

Never smoke or have an open flame nearby while you are working on the fuel system of a vehicle. Doing so could cause a fire or explosion, which may damage the vehicle or cause personal injury.
