1965 Ford Mustang Steering Wheel Removal Instructions

The 1965 Ford Mustang, a sporty car based on the Ford Falcon, was introduced by Ford Motor Company in April of 1964. Although titled as 1965 models, some collectors consider the very early production Mustangs, made up until September of 1964, as 1964½ models. The plastic steering wheel was color coded to the interior and sported a large chromed horn ring. If the original steering wheel in your 1965 Mustang has seen better days, or if the inner workings of your steering column need attention, you will need to remove the wheel first.

Tools Used: Adjustable wrench, Universal steering wheel puller

Remove Steering Wheel

Open the hood by pulling out on the latch just above the center of the front bumper while pulling up on the hood. Loosen the negative ground cable from the battery on the passenger side of the engine bay with an adjustable wrench turned in a counterclockwise direction. Lift the cable from the battery.

Inside the car, push in on the center of the horn ring and rotate it counterclockwise to release the holding tabs. Lift the ring and the spring underneath it from the steering wheel.

Remove the nut from the steering shaft at the center of the steering wheel with an adjustable wrench, turned in a counterclockwise direction.

Locate the two threaded holes in the steering wheel on either side of the steering shaft. Attach a universal steering wheel puller to the steering wheel by threading two bolts through the end slots in the puller and into the threaded holes on the steering wheel. (Note: the bolts only need to be finger-tight.)

Turn the center bolt on the steering wheel puller with an adjustable wrench turned in a clockwise direction. Continue turning the center bolt until the steering wheel lifts from the steering shaft. Lift the steering wheel from the steering column and remove it from the car.

Tips & Warnings

A universal steering wheel puller should come with an assortment of bolts. Choose two bolts from your kit that fit into the threaded holes in your steering wheel. Make sure the bolts turn easily in the holes and do not cross-thread.

Do not reconnect the negative battery terminal until the steering wheel or a replacement has been installed. Install the steering wheel by placing it on the steering shaft and tightening the center nut with an adjustable wrench in a clockwise direction.
