1978 Chevrolet El Camino Tighten Power Steering Belt

The 1978 Chevrolet El Camino is known for its power and raw muscle. Maintenance on the '78 El Camino was simple, as everything was easy to access. The power steering belt is no exception. These large cars with truck beds did not use tensioner pulleys like newer vehicles do. Tightening the belt requires pulling or prying the component until the belt is tight, then tightening the bolt that holds it in place. Some coordination is required, as one hand is needed to hold the belt tight and the other to tighten it down.

Tools Used: Socket wrench, Socket set, Pry bar

Tighten Power Steering Belt

Open the hood for access to the power steering pulley. It is located at the bottom driver side of the El Camino's engine.

Loosen the three bolts holding the power steering pump to the bracket, using a socket wrench. Do not remove the bolts, as they just need to be turned back one turn to loosen the pump.

Ensure that the belt is routed on the power steering pump pulley and the main shaft in the middle of the engine.

Crawl under the vehicle by the driver door. Insert a pry bar between the power steering pump and the mounting bracket. Push the power steering pump toward the wheel well until the belt is tight.

Tighten the pivot bolt on the top of the pump with a socket wrench. Ensure that your other hand is holding the belt tight until the bolt is tightened with the wrench.

Tighten the two remaining bolts with the socket wrench. Feel the belt to ensure it is still tight. There should be no tension on the belt.

Start the car and allow it to idle. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the right and then to the left. Listen for any squealing. The sound of squealing will mean the belt is not tight enough on the pulleys. Repeat the steps to tighten the belt.

Tips & Warnings

Inspect the belt for any cracks and signs of wear. Replace the belt if you see cracks or wear.

Use extreme caution working around the engine. Ensure the engine is cooled down before performing maintenance.

Take the keys out of the ignition to prevent accidental starting by another person while you're working in the engine area.
