1985 Toyota Corona Timing Belt Instructions

You can save money on labor charges by changing the timing belt on your Toyota Corona yourself. The procedure is not difficult. A person with basic auto repair knowledge can do it in a garage or driveway in a few hours. The project requires no special tools, and those required for the job can be found in most toolboxes. Allow plenty of time to complete the project so that there is no need to feel as if you have to rush.

Tools Used: Socket set, Wrench set

Timing Belt Instructions

Turn the crankshaft until the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and the engine block line up using a wrench. This will set the number one piston at top dead center, making sure the engine stays in time as the project progresses.

Remove the upper and lower timing belt covers using a socket and ratchet to loosen the bolts. Loosen the bolt on the idler pulley using a socket and ratchet. Push the idler as far as it will go to the left.

Remove the timing belt from the engine. Put the new timing belt on the engine. Move the idler pulley to the right to place tension on the timing belt. Tighten the idler pulley bolt using a socket and ratchet.

Install the upper and lower timing belt covers and tighten the bolts with a socket and ratchet.

Tips & Warnings

Do not attempt to start the engine when the timing belt is off or it may cause internal damage to the rocker arms and lifters.
