How to Replace the Fuel Pump on a 1985 Volvo 740

The 1985 Volvo 740 is one of the first general consumer vehicles to use fuel injection. The fuel pump is located outside the gas tank on the 1985 model 740. If the 740 has continuous fuel injection, the fuel pump is located with the fuel accumulator on the side of the tank, otherwise it is located in the front of the fuel tank. Loosen the gas cap to release pressure in the system before you get started.

Tools Used: Floor jack, Jack stands, Rags, Carburetor cleaner, Drain pan, Locking forceps, Set of sockets, Set of wrenches

Replace the Fuel Pump

Jack up the rear of the car with the floor jack, then support it with jack stands. Unplug the electrical lead from the pump. If the fuel pump is mounted on a plate, remove the plate using the appropriate socket or wrench.

Spray carburetor cleaner around the hose connections and wipe the area clean with the rags. Place the drain pan under the hoses. Clamp the forceps on the fuel lines. Loosen the hose clamps and pull the hoses off the fuel pump. Loosen the retaining nuts, then lift the fuel pump off the rubber mounts.

Place the new pump on the rubber mounts, then tighten the retaining nuts. Connect the fuel lines and tighten the hose clamps. Remove the forceps. Reinstall the plate and plug the electrical connector in. Start the engine to check for leaks fuel leaks.
