How to Change Power Steering Belt on 1979 Chevrolet Corvette

If the 1979 Corvette has the original factory-installed belts on it they are probably very worn or even dry rotted. It may be best to replace all the belts while you have the opportunity. It will save some time in not having to pull everything apart again in the future. Only the basic mechanic's tools are needed to remove the old belts and install new ones.

Tools Used: New power steering belt, Ratchet, 9/16-inch socket, 5/8-inch socket, 3/8-drive ratchet, Short extension, for ratchet, Pry bar

Change Power Steering Belt

Raise the hood of the vehicle and disconnect the battery cable ends from the battery. You may have to remove the alternator belt or any other belt that is in front of the belt you are replacing.

Use a ratchet and 9/16-inch socket to loosen the bolts on the alternator and push down slightly on the alternator to create some slack in the belt.

Remove the belt from the pulley on the alternator and slide the belt over the fan blades and off the vehicle.

Use the 9/18-inch socket to loosen the bolts on the power steering pump. Push down on the pump and remove the belt by sliding it over the fan blades.

Install the new belt following the removal instructions in reverse. Make sure the belts are seated on the pulleys correctly

Attach a 3/8-inch drive ratchet or a pry bar into the slot on the pump and pull back on the ratchet or pry bar to tighten the belt.

Tighten the bolts on the pump and tighten the alternator belt in the same manner. Reconnect the battery cables to the battery posts.
