How to Change a Sprocket on a 1985 Honda TRX 125

The Honda TRX 125 is a powerful, race-style ATV with a 125 cc two-stroke engine installed. The transmission sprocket is located on the side of the transmission and powers the drive chain. The sprocket is protected by a plastic cover in clear view on the side of the transmission. It's mounted to the transmission by a retainer in the center of the sprocket.

Tools Used: Chain link remover, Ratchet and socket set

Change a Sprocket

Place the link remover on a link in the drive chain and make sure that the push rod in the tool is over a pin on the link. Turn the remover tool's handle to the right until the pin in the link is forced out.

Pull the drive chain off the axle and transmission sprocket and set it aside. Remove the two bolts from the sprocket cover using a ratchet set and remove the cover from the transmission.

Remove the retainer from the center of the transmission sprocket using a ratchet set and pull the sprocket off the transmission. Place the new sprocket onto the transmission, then replace and tighten the retainer using a ratchet and socket.

Place the chain around the rear axle and guide it to the new transmission sprocket. Reconnect the chain be reversing the method you used to disconnect it. Place the sprocket cover onto the side of the transmission and replace the mounting bolts.
