The gas tank in a 1972 Chevrolet C10 pickup is mounted behind the seat. Depending on the condition of the vehicle, the gas tank may have rotted on the inside or the seals may have failed, causing the truck's interior to smell of gasoline. This isn't good for your health, and can be very dangerous because the fumes are flammable. To fix the problem, you need to take out the old gas tank and install a new one.
Tools Used: 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set, Replacement fuel tank, Flathead screwdriver, 1-gallon gas can with gas
Install a Gas Tank
Tilt forward the front seat by either using the lever on the side of the seat or removing the wingnut on the sides of the seat by hand. Remove the fuel lines running to the tank using the flathead screwdriver and then pull off the wiring to the sending unit by hand.
Unbolt the gas tank from the cab using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Carefully lift the tank out of the C10, maneuvering around the filler neck at the same time.
Install the replacement gas tank into the cab using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Install the fuel lines onto the gas tank using the flathead screwdriver. Install the wiring to the tank by hand.
Open the gas cap on the outside of the cab by hand and then pour the fuel from the gas can into the tank. Start the C10 and make sure the gas gauge is working properly and that the truck runs well. If not, recheck your connections for leaks or problems.
