How to Remove the Ignition Switch on a 1981 Oldsmobile Cutlass

The ignition system in a 1981 Oldsmobile Cutlass starts with the key. The key is plugged in to the ignition and when the key is turned, the ignition switch sends an electrical surge to the starter solenoid. The solenoid powers the starter to turn the flywheel, which starts the car. A faulty ignition switch will cause the car to not start. Removing the switch will mean accessing the steering column.

Tools Used: Socket wrench, Socket set, Phillips-head screwdriver

Remove the Ignition Switch

Open the hood to access the battery. Disconnect the negative cable with a socket wrench. This will isolate the electrical power.

Unbolt the kick panel under the steering wheel with a socket wrench. This will expose the bottom of the steering column. There will be four bolts to undo.

Unbolt the steering column with a socket wrench to lower the steering shaft for easier access. The ignition switch will be bolted to the steering column near the ignition lock.

Unbolt the ignition switch with a Phillips-head screwdriver. The switch will be held in place by two screws.

Unplug the wiring harness at the back of the switch. Pull the tabs out to unlock the wiring harness from the switch. Pull away from the switch.

Pull the switch away from the steering column. The switch is removed from the car.

Tips & Warnings

Always use caution when working around electrical components. Isolate the battery before servicing.
