How to Put an Oil Pan on a 1986 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEL

The Mercedes 560 SEL has an oil pan that holds excess oil as it circulates through the transmission. When the oil pan has a leak in it, the engine cannot hold the proper amount of oil. Low oil levels lead to grinding gears and an overheated engine. Over time, a leaky oil pan can cause serious engine damage. Fortunately, replacing the oil pan only requires a few tools and about 30 to 45 minutes of time to complete.

Tools Used: Jack, Jack stands, 18 mm socket wrench, 5-quart collection pan

Put an Oil Pan

Park the 560 SEL on a flat surface. Raise the front of the car with a jack onto jack stands. Make sure the engine is cool before going underneath the car to do any work.

Slide underneath the car and locate the oil pan in the center of the engine. This is a large, black metal tank surrounded by bolts. Place a collection pan beneath the drain pan.

Remove all but one of the bolts surrounding the oil pan with an 18 mm socket wrench and wait 10 to 15 minutes for the fluid to drain into the collection pan below. Hold the oil pan and remove the final bolt. Pour the remaining fluid into the collection pan. Wash off the bolts.

Line up the new oil pan with the bolt holes. Attach the bolts to fasten the pan in place. Lower the car from the jack stands with the jack.

Open the engine hood and prop it up with the tension bar. Locate the oil fill port above the oil pan. Place a funnel into the port. Pour in 3 quarts of oil. Lower the tension bar and close the hood.
