How to Replace a Broken Motor Support on a 1988 Ford Bronco ll

A broken motor support, more often called a motor mount, on a Ford Bronco II could cause serious stress on the engine. With a broken support, the engine rests at an odd angle inside the motor bay. This could cause serious damage to the transmission, torque converter and steering shaft. Although a broken motor support is critical repair, replacing it is relatively straightforward.

Tools Used: Drain pan, Pliers, Socket set, Funnel

Replace a Broken Motor Support

Place a bottle jack under the motor in the corner that has the broken motor support. For example, if the motor support is in the right driver's side of the engine, place the bottle jack under the right driver's side of the engine block. Jack the engine up to relieve stress on the support. Ask your assistant to tell you when to stop jacking.

Remove the bolts that secure the motor support to the motor and to the Bronco's frame. Hold the bolt's nut with a wrench and turn the bolt out with a socket and ratchet. Each end of the support secures with one bolt.

Secure the new motor support to the Bronco's frame using the bolt, nut, socket and wrench.

Place the other end of the support against the motor. If the support does not meet up with the mounting bracket, adjust the corner of the engine up or down with the jack. Have your assistant tell you when the motor support lines up with the mount on the engine.

Secure the new motor support to the Bronco's engine using the bolt, nut, socket and wrench.

Lower the bottle jack and remove it from under the Bronco.
