How to Replace an Oxygen Sensor on a 1987 Chevrolet 350

The Chevrolet 350 cubic inch engine has been popular for a number of years, and has been in many vehicles. In the 1987 Silverado, Chevy used an oxygen sensor to help the computer control the throttle-body injection system in the truck. If the sensor goes out, you may experience rough idle or a loss in gas mileage. In this case, the project vehicle is a 1987 Chevrolet Silverado with a 350 cubic inch V8 engine.

Tools Used: 3/8-inch ratchet, 3/8-inch oxygen sensor socket, Replacement oxygen sensor, Anti-seize compound

Replace Oxygen Sensor

Open the hood and locate the oxygen sensor. It's on the driver's side exhaust manifold, toward where the manifold connects to the exhaust. Unplug the oxygen sensor from the wiring using your hands.

Remove the oxygen sensor from the manifold using the oxygen sensor socket and the 3/8-inch ratchet.

Apply the anti-seize compound to the threads on the replacement oxygen sensor, making sure not to touch the sensor itself. Then hand thread the replacement sensor into the exhaust manifold.

Tighten the oxygen sensor into the manifold using the oxygen sensor socket and the 3/8-inch ratchet. Then plug the replacement sensor into the stock harness.
