How to Reset the Security System for a 1999 Chevy Lumina

The security system on a 1999 Chevrolet Lumina is designed to protect the vehicle from theft and vandalism. This system is controlled by the body control module (BCM). When the BCM detects a problem with the security system it stores a trouble code in its internal flash memory and illuminates the security light on the dashboard. In order to reset this system, an automotive scan tool must be connected to the Lumina to clear the trouble codes from the BCM.

Step 1 - Shift the Lumina's transmission into park and turn off the engine. Set the parking brake and turn the ignition back to the "ON" position, but do not re-start the engine.

Step 2 - Connect the scan tool's communication cable to the Lumina's diagnostic data port. This port is located underneath the dashboard on the driver's side of the vehicle.

Step 3 - Power on the scan tool and allow it to boot up. Follow the on-screen instructions to input the Lumina's specific powertrain information.

Step 4 - Select "BCM" from the tool's main menu. Choose "Codes," then select "Clear all current and stored DTCs." DTC stands for "diagnostic trouble code." Allow the scan tool to clear the codes and reset the BCM.

Disconnect the scan tool from the diagnostic data port once the display indicates that the codes have been cleared and the BCM is reset. Start the engine and verify that the security light is no longer illuminated.

TIPS: An automotive scan tool is a hand-held computer unit designed to communicate with the computers in passenger vehicles. Scan tools are available from auto parts stores, automotive tool retailers and online tool stores.
