How to Install a Filters on a 1989 Cadillac Fleetwood

Installing filters in a 1989 Cadillac Fleetwood will only take a few minutes per filter. The air filter and fuel filter are located in the engine compartment. The oil filter is located under the vehicle. Changing out the filters at regular intervals will prolong the life of the vehicle. Always change the oil filter when changing the oil on the car.

Tools Used: Line wrench, Socket wrench, Socket set, Oil filter wrench, Drain pan

Install a Filters

Fuel Filter

Open the hood to access the engine compartment. Locate the air filter housing at the top of the engine.

Pull the air filter housing off the top of the engine by losening the nut on the top of the housing. Pull it off the engine.

Unscrew the fuel line from the front of the carburetor with a line wrench. Pull the fuel line away from the carburetor.

Pull the fuel filter and the spring out of the carburetor. Replace it with the new filter. Ensure the spring goes back in before the filter.

Tighten the fuel line back on to the carburetor with the line wrench. Position the air filter housing back on the engine and tighten the nut at the top of the housing.

Air Filter

Locate the retaining clips at the end of the air filter housing. Loosen the four clips around the filter housing by hand.

Pull the top of the housing away from the bottom by hand. Pull the air filter out of the assembly.

Replace with the new air filter. Place the cover back on the housing. Tighten the clips back on the housing by hand.

Oil Filter

Locate the oil filter under the vehicle directly in front of the oil pan. The oil pan is at the bottom of the engine.

Place a catch-pan under the oil filter. Unscrew the oil filter with a filter wrench. Allow the excess oil in the filter housing to drain off in the catch-pan. Place the waste filter in the catch-pan with the excess oil.

Fill the new filter with engine oil. Rub engine oil around the gasket on the top of the filter. This will lubricate the filter.

Screw the filter onto the filter housing by hand. Do not wrench tighten, as this will strip the threads on the filter or the housing.

Tips & Warnings

Use caution working under the car. Ensure the parking brake is set and the car is sitting on a flat and level surface.

Contact a local recycling center for disposal of the waste oil filter and oil.
