How to Install a Fuel Pump on a 1988 BMW 325i

The 1988 BMW 325i is part of the E30 generation of the 3 Series, one of the most popular lineups in the history of the German carmaker. Today, the BMW 325i is fast approaching classic car status and as such needs regular maintenance of its aging components to keep it performing reliably on the road. One part that may need to be replaced is the fuel pump, which on the E30 is located in the gas tank, under the rear seat.

Tools Used: Screwdriver, Socket set and ratchet, New fuel pump, Soldering iron, Rubber gloves

Install a Fuel Pump

Open the hood. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery terminal. Remove the rear seat bottom by pulling it firmly up. Move it out of the car.

Remove the four screws that secure the access cover to the fuel pump/fuel tank with a Phillips screwdriver. Set the cover aside.

Remove the electrical connectors that go to the pump and the fuel sending unit. These will simply pull off. Loosen the hose clamp that holds the fuel line to the pump with a screwdriver. Pull the hose of the fuel pump.

Remove the four nuts that hold the sending unit in place. Set the sending unit on a rag or in a glass container, as fuel may drain from it.

Unscrew the fuel pump assembly from the tank by rotating it 10 to 15 degrees until it can be withdrawn. Before rotating the pump, note the position it is in. As an added precaution, you can also mark its position with a marker.

Remove the O-ring that seals the fuel pump to the tank. Pull the filter screen from the bottom of the pump. Pull the pump out of the fuel pump assembly bracket. Remove the fuel line from the top of the fuel pump. Cut the wires that go from the fuel pump to the assembly.

Slide the new fuel pump into the bracket. Reinstall the screen on the bottom of the new fuel pump. Install the fuel line onto the new pump. Solder the wires on the new fuel pump to the assembly with a soldering iron, using the wires on the old pump as a guide.

Install a new O-ring where the fuel pump installs, lubricating it with fuel. Install the new fuel pump assembly in the same orientation as old one by screwing it into the fuel tank.

Reinstall the fuel sender with the four nuts. Reinstall the wires on the fuel pump and the sending unit. Reinstall the access cover with the four screws. Reinstall the back seat by pressing it down into place. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery.
