How to Install the Serpentine Belt on a 1989 Chevrolet Celebrity

Serpentine belts are single belts used to replace several V-belts on newer cars. Starting in the late 1970's, manufacturers began moving toward the serpentine-belt system and most cars today use this type of belt. The belt is inexpensive, durable and changing them requires less time. If the serpentine belt in your Chevrolet Celebrity shows any signs of damage or abnormal wear, change it immediately. New belts are available from any auto-parts retailer.

Tools Used: Wrench set, Socket set, Ratchet

Install Serpentine Belt

Locate the negative battery cable and remove the retaining bolt from the cable end with a wrench. Lift the cable off the battery and isolate the cable from the battery.

Locate the serpentine-belt tensioner on the front of the engine. Place a socket and ratchet on the pulley axis bolt or the bolt that runs through the center of the pulley and into the tensioner. Rotate the tensioner counterclockwise with your ratchet and socket, then remove the belt from the pulleys.

Rotate the tensioner back to the starting location, using care to not let it snap back or damage will occur to the components inside the tensioner. Install the new serpentine belt on all the pulleys, except the tensioner pulley, using the belt- routing diagram on the cowl of the car as a guide.

Rotate the tensioner counterclockwise, then slide the belt onto the tensioner pulley. Rotate the tensioner clockwise, tensioning the belt.

Connect the negative battery cable to the negative battery terminal. Tighten the retaining bolt with a wrench.
