How to Replace a Fuel Pump in a Hyundai Sonata

The Hyundai Sonata fuel pump is electric so you should check its fuses and relays and before inspecting it. If your vehicle still has difficulty getting fuel and your tank has fuel, you may need to clean or replace the fuel pump. The Hyundai Sonata comes in a variety of styles and trim levels and this can affect your choice of fuel pump.

Step 1 - Select the new fuel pump for your Hyundai Sonata. You will not only need to know the make and model, but also the engine size. Models made from 1998 to 2001 have the 2.4 L Sirius or 2.5 L Hyundai engine. Models built from 2002 to 2005 have a 2.4 L Sirius or 2.7 L Hyundai engine. Models made after this date will be equipped with a 2.4 L or 3.3 L engine.

Step 2 - Prepare your vehicle for fuel pump servicing. Relieve the fuel system pressure and drain the fuel tank. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench.

Step 3 - Disconnect the fuel supply and return lines as well as the evaporative emission lines from the fuel tank. Remove the fuel fill and vent hoses. Unplug the electrical connections for the fuel sender and fuel pump. Remove the fuel tank straps so you can take the fuel tank off. Disconnect the fuel pump from the fuel tank by removing the mounting bolts.

Step 4 - Install the new fuel pump using the items included in the kit and use a torque wrench to tighten the mounting bolts on the fuel pump to between 12 and 24 inch pounds.

Complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure.
