How to Replace the Oxygen Sensor on a Ford Windstar

The oxygen sensor on your Ford Windstar monitors the exhaust gases coming out of the engine. These exhaust gases contain contaminates. The sensor's job is to monitor the contents of the exhaust and send the information to the Windstar's computer. The computer can then adjust the air-to-fuel ratio to optimize the fuel consumption and power output of the Windstar. Over time, the oxygen sensor will fail. When this happens, you need to replace the sensor.

Step 1 - Jack up the Windstar using the front jack point behind the radiator.

Step 2 - Place jack stands under the front pinch welds of the vehicle and lower the Windstar onto the stands.

Step 3 - Climb under the car and locate the oxygen sensor on the catalytic converter. It will look like a small plug sticking out of the exhaust towards the front of the vehicle.

Step 4 - Disconnect the electrical leads running to the oxygen sensor.

Step 5 - Unbolt the sensor using the oxygen sensor socket and a socket wrench.

Install the new sensor. Installation is the reverse of removal.

THINGS YOU'LL NEED: Jack, Jack stands, Socket wrench, Oxygen sensor socket, Replacement oxygen sensor

WARNINGS: Make sure that you change the oxygen sensor only after the Windstar has had a chance to cool down. The exhaust piping, oxygen sensor, and catalytic converter become very hot during engine operation and can seriously burn you if you touch them while the components are still hot.
