How to Install a Power Steering Pump in a Miata

The power steering pump in a Miata wears out over time and must be replaced. You may also need to remove it to work on other parts of the engine. The Miata's power steering pump comes without a reservoir, so if your reservoir is leaking, you must purchase it by itself. Alternatively, if the pump is bad, you can purchase the pump separately from the reservoir.

Step 1 - Remove the adjusting bolt on the power steering pump bracket and push the power steering pump in toward the engine to loosen tension on the accessory drive belt. Lift the accessory drive belt off the pulleys.

Step 2 - Unplug and remove the pressure switch connector. Place a drain pan under the power steering pump. Remove the pipe and return hose with a line wrench. Remove the hose bracket using the appropriate sockets.

Step 3 - Unbolt and remove the power steering pump and bracket. Use an appropriate socket to unbolt the bracket from the power steering pump.

Step 4 - Install the bracket on the new power steering pump. Bolt the bracket and pump assembly onto the engine. Use line wrenches to reinstall the pipe and return hose. Reinstall the pressure switch connector and plug it in.

Step 5 - Route the drive belt around the pulleys. Pull the power steering pump away from the engine to tension the belt. Reinstall and tighten the adjusting bolt. The belt has the appropriate tension if you can twist it 90 degrees.

Step 6 - Fill the reservoir with power steering fluid. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and right several times. Add fluid as needed. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and right several more times. Add more fluid, if needed. Repeat until the fluid level stabilizes.

Start the engine and allow the vehicle to idle. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and right several times until the fluid is not foamy and the fluid level stops dropping. Refill the fluid as needed.
