How to Replace the Speed Sensor on a 2001 Ford Windstar

The 2001 Windstar is a minivan designed and manufactured by Ford. The Windstar is equipped with a vehicle speed sensor. This works to track and monitor the speed at which the Windstar is traveling. The sensor relays the information to the engine computer, which controls the speedometer accordingly. The speed sensor will need to be replaced if the Windstar's speedometer begins jumping around or fails to work completely.

Step 1 - Place the Windstar in "Park" on a level surface. Allow the van to cool down for a half hour.

Step 2 - Raise the front passenger side of the vehicle using a jack. Place a jack stand underneath it, and lower the Windstar onto the jack stand. Place wheel blocks around the opposite tire.

Step 3 - Slide under the vehicle with your back to the ground. Look straight up, and you will see the transmission.

Step 4 - Locate the speed sensor on the right side of the transmission toward the engine. You will see a plug-type component sticking out with an electrical connector plugged into it. This is the sensor.

Step 5 - Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor. Turn the sensor counterclockwise until it is loose enough to remove. Pull the sensor from the transmission, and discard it.

Align the replacement speed sensor on the transmission, and push it into place. Turn the sensor clockwise until it is tight. Plug the electrical wire connector into the new sensor. You will hear it click into place. Slide out from beneath the vehicle, and lower it off the jack stands. Remove the wheel blocks.
