How to Reset a 2006 Impala Computer

The computer on your 2006 Chevy Impala generates and stores trouble codes related to the vehicle's emissions control system. These codes are stored on the computer until you run a diagnostic test and retrieve them. Once retrieved, you can fix your Impala, but the codes will remain on the computer. To get rid of them, you'll need to clear the codes using a special tool called an OBD (onboard diagnostic) scan tool. These tools can be found in most auto parts stores in the electronics section.

Step 1 - Pull down on the fuse panel cover in the driver's side foot well below the steering column with your fingers.

Step 2 - Locate the open OBD port (a rectangular port) to the left of the main panel.

Step 3 - Plug the OBD plug from the scan tool into the open port.

Step 4 - Turn the ignition key to the on position but don't crank the engine.

Step 5 - Press the "reset" or "clear" button on your scan tool (the exact phrase of the button varies depending on the make and model of scan tool you own). This will clear the codes from the computer.

Start your Impala's engine and drive at normal highway speeds for about 30 minutes to allow the computer to reset itself.
