You can reset the computer in your Jeep Cherokee from your home garage, saving yourself time and money. The PCM (power train control module) or computer controls the Cherokee's ignition, fuel system, emission and other systems. When it detects a malfunction in any of the vehicle's systems, it will alert you with a warning light on the instrument panel. It will also let you know when your Jeep needs regular servicing. After you have had the repairs or servicing done, you or your mechanic will need to reset the computer to keep it functioning properly.
Step 1 - Find the Data Link Connector port next to the fuse panel under the driver's dashboard. Plug the computerized scan tool into this port.
Step 2 - Check the computerized scan tool's owner's manual on exactly how to clear the codes and reset the computer because each model is a little different. Most scan tools will have a "delete codes" command on the faceplate or within the menu that you can scroll to and select.
Step 3 - Delete all codes. This will reset the vehicle's computer. Unplug the scan tool.
Put the key into the ignition and start the vehicle. Verify that all warning lights and service lights have shut off on the instrument panel.
TIPS: Most auto parts retailers will let you borrow their computerized scan tools for free for the purpose of clearing the codes and resetting the computer.
