How to Change the Oil Pump on a 1978 Ford Pinto

The 1978 Ford Pinto was equipped with a 2.3-liter engine as standard equipment, and made available with a 2.8 liter engine as optional equipment. Within the bottom of both engines, inside of the oil pan, is an oil pump. The pump is designed to produce between 40 and 60 pounds of oil pressure. When the pump fails, oil pressure will diminish substantially, particularly at high engine speeds. Without an adequate supply of oil, the engine will overheat and eventually fail. For this reason, the pump should be replaced before operating the engine.

Tools Used: Jack, Jack stands, Container, Wrench, Gasket sealant, Oil pan gasket, Engine oil (4 qt.)

Change the Oil Pump

Lift the Pinto with a jack and position the car onto jack stands. Position a container underneath the engine and drain the crankcase oil into the container by removing the bolt from the oil pan with a wrench. Pull the oil dipstick out of the dipstick tube.

Remove the bolts that secure the flywheel inspection cover to the bottom of the front of the transmission with a wrench, then lift the cover away from the car.

Turn the integral nut at the tip of the steering cable, where the cable enters the rack and pinion assembly, in a counterclockwise direction with a wrench, then pull the cable out of the assembly.

Remove the bolts that secure the rack and pinion assembly to the crossmember with a wrench and move the assembly forward to provide clearance for the oil pan.

Unfasten the oil pan's bolts and lower the oil pan to expose the oil pump. Remove the oil pump's single retaining bolt with a wrench and lower the pump out of the engine. Position the new oil pump against the engine and install the pump's securing bolt with a wrench.

Remove the gasket from the lip of the oil pan, then apply gasket sealant to a new pan gasket and position the gasket onto the oil pan. Press the oil pan onto the engine and install the pan's securing bolts with a wrench.

Position the rack and pinion assembly against the crossmember and install the assembly's securing bolts with a wrench. Position the steering cable against the rack and pinion and tighten the cable's integral nut with a wrench.

Position the flywheel inspection cover against the transmission and tighten the cover's bolts with a wrench. Lower the oil dipstick into the dipstick tube. Fill the engine with four quarts of engine oil and lower the Pinto to the ground.
