How to Replace the Fan Belt on a 1987 Chevrolet Celebrity

Replacing the fan belt in the 1987 Chevrolet Celebrity really means changing the serpentine belt on the front of the engine. Whether you have a 2.8-liter V6 or the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, the process involves the same steps. While the location of the tensioner will vary slightly, the tensioner is manipulated the same way. The belt path is slightly different between the two engines as well but there is a belt path diagram on the radiator support that will guide you through the installation.

Tools Used: Wrench set, Socket set, Breaker bar

Replace Fan Belt

Disconnect the negative battery cable from the negative battery terminal using a wrench to remove the clamp bolt from the battery cable end. Lift the cable off the battery and set it aside.

Place a socket on the apex bolt, the one that runs through the center of the tensioner pulley, and use a breaker bar to rotate the tensioner counterclockwise. Pull the belt off the tensioner and pulleys, then slowly rotate the tensioner back to the home position.

Discard the old belt and install a new belt around the pulleys, following the path on the diagram under the hood. Leave the belt off the tensioner pulley for now.

Rotate the tensioner counterclockwise, then slip the belt onto the tensioner pulley. Rotate the tensioner clockwise, tightening the new belt as you go. Do not force the tensioner--let it take up the slack in the belt itself or you will damage the belt and tensioner.

Install the negative battery cable on the negative battery terminal and tighten the clamp bolt with a wrench. Start the engine and watch the belt to be sure it is on straight and does not wobble.
