How to Adjust the Idle on a 1982 Chevrolet Camaro

The 1982 Chevrolet Camaro idle speed controls how high the engine rpms are when the engine is running but not propelling the car. The idle speed set screw, located in the front of the carburetor, allows you to control the idle speed with a quick adjustment. Having the idle speed set too high wastes gasoline and places undue stress on the transmission when you shift from park into a drive gear. Having the speed too low can lead to stalling or other performance issues. If you're handy with a screwdriver, you can adjust the idle speed on your 1982 Camaro in minutes.

Tools Used: Screwdriver

Adjust the Idle

Open the hood on your 1982 Camaro and support the hood with a prop rod.

Remove the air cleaner assembly by first removing the wing nut from the top, pulling the lid off and then removing the air cleaner base by hand. Start the engine.

Locate the idle speed set screw in the front of the carburetor. Turn the screw counterclockwise to lower the idle speed. Turn it clockwise to raise the idle speed. Ideally, you want the engine to idle at approximately 1500 rpms which you can check by looking at the tachometer on the dashboard.

Reinstall the air cleaner assembly. Close the Camaro's hood.
