How to Locate the Fuel Pump on a 1985 Chevrolet Celebrity

The fuel pump on a 1985 Chevrolet Celebrity is located in the fuel tank. In order to access the fuel pump, the fuel tank must be lowered. The fuel pump is installed through the top of the fuel tank. A fuel tank is somewhat difficult to manipulate, due to its shape; it is much safer and easier to lower if the fuel level is low. If the level is over 50 percent full, it is suggested that the fuel be siphoned off to lighten the tank and prevent spills, should the tank be tipped.

Tools Used: Floor jack, Jack stands, Ratchet, Set of sockets, Common screwdriver, Siphon hose with hand pump, Gas can

Locate the Fuel Pump

Turn the key to the "One" position and check the gas gauge. If the fuel is over half full, it will be necessary to siphon fuel out of the tank. Turn the key to the "Off" position.

Open the fuel door and remove the gas cap. Insert the siphon fuel line into the tank through the fuel filler tube and put the opposite end into the gas can. Pump the bellowed pump by squeezing it until the fuel begins to flow. If the gas can will hold as much as five gallons, it should be obvious as to the amount to be removed relative to how much fuel it presently contains and the capacity of the tank. If it is still unclear, turn the key on occasionally to determine when sufficient fuel has been removed. If more than five gallons needs to be removed, it may be necessary to empty the fuel can into another vehicle.

Raise the rear of the car, using the floor jack positioned under the frame, just forward of each rear tire. Place the jack stands just forward of the floor jack and lower the car onto the jack stands.

Loosen the hose clamps on the filler and the vent hose, using a screwdriver where they connect to the gas tank. Do not remove the hoses yet. Unplug the electrical harness connector to the fuel pump, located at the back of the fuel tank.

Place the floor jack under the center of the fuel tank, between both fuel tank support straps. Lift the jack up to contact the bottom of the fuel tank and give it support. Remove the bolt in each of the two support straps, using a socket, and lower the straps.

Lower the fuel tank slowly while simultaneously twisting the filler and vent hose to remove them from the fuel tank. Stop lowering the tank when it is possible to access the top of the fuel tank. Squeeze the fuel line fittings by the sides and pull them off the pump nozzles.

Lower the fuel tank the rest of the way down to the ground. Access the pump by removing the lock ring on the top of the tank that secures the pump housing to the tank. Notice that the lock ring has a series of vertical and horizontal tangs. The horizontal tangs engage corresponding tangs on the tank opening that lock it in place. The vertical tangs are used for rotating the ring to lock or unlock the tangs and free the pump.

Tap any of the vertical tangs with a screwdriver and hammer to rotate the lock ring counterclockwise to disengage the ring from the pump, which will allow the fuel pump to be lifted out of the tank.
