How to Repair the Headlights on a 1985 BMW 325E

Replacing the headlights on the 1985 BMW 325e with new sealed-beam lights requires a Phillips screwdriver and a few minutes of your time. The car uses a dual-headlight system with separate high- and low-beam bulbs. The headlights should be changed in pairs so the light and color output matches on both sides of the car. Replacement bulbs are available from any auto parts store or through a BMW dealership.

This process does not require tools.

Locate the four Phillips screws on the front of the grill. Remove them with a Phillips screwdriver and set them aside. Open the hood of your car and locate the knurled nut at the outer edge of the grill. Remove it with your fingers.

Lift the grill off the front of the car and set it aside. Locate the electrical connector on the rear of the light and pull it straight off the terminals. Remove the three retaining screws on the headlight retaining ring with a Phillips screwdriver, and then pull the sealed-beam bulb out of the car.

Position a new headlight bulb in the front of the car and install the metal retaining ring over the bulb. Install the three retaining screws and tighten them with a Phillips screwdriver. Push the electrical connector onto the rear of the bulb, making sure it seats completely.

Position the grill back on the car, install the four retaining screws, and tighten them with a Phillips screwdriver. Install the knurled nut on the inside of the grill, tighten it by hand, and close the hood.
