The heater core in a 1983 Jeep CJ-7 creates the heat that the climate control system uses to warm the cab. If the heater core breaks or develops a leak, then the coolant that helps generate that heat can empty into the passenger compartment, and it could cause the engine to overheat. To solve the problem, you first have to remove the heater core from the dashboard of the CJ-7 so that you can either repair or replace the defective unit.
Tools Used: Drain pan, Flat-head screwdriver, 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set, Phillips screwdriver
Instructions
Put a drain pan under the Jeep's core support. Pop open the hood and open up the radiator cap. Open the petcock on the bottom of the radiator and empty approximately 2 quarts of the coolant into the drain pan. Close the petcock with your hands.
Remove the heater hoses from the heater core mount on the firewall with the flat-head screwdriver. Unplug the wiring to the heater core with your hands. Unbolt the heater core assembly from the firewall with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.
Unplug the heater control cables from the heater box under the dash with your hands. Tilt the heater assembly from the underside of the passenger side of the dash and take it out from under the dash.
Take off the screws on the backside of the heater assembly with the Phillips screwdriver. Pull out the heater core from the heater assembly with your hands.
