How to Install a Fuel Pump on a 1984 Chevrolet Silverado Truck

The function of the fuel pump mounted on the engine block in a 1984 Chevrolet Silverado truck is to pump fuel from the gas tank to the carburetor. If the fuel pump stops working correctly, then the fuel will not reach the carburetor, causing the engine to stop running correctly, if at all. To fix the problem, the defective fuel pump must be removed from the Silverado and replaced with a new one.

Tools Used: Drain pan, 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set, Gasket scraper, Replacement fuel pump, Replacement fuel pump gasket

Install a Fuel Pump

Place the drain pan on the ground, beneath the fuel pump, which is located on the passenger side of the engine block, towards the front of the engine. Pop the hood. Remove the fuel lines running to the fuel pump, using the flat-head screwdriver.

Unbolt the fuel pump from the engine block, using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, being careful to catch the rod inside the pump with your hands. Remove any leftover gasket bits from the engine block, using the gasket scraper.

Install the new gasket onto the fuel pump. Place the rod for the fuel pump into the engine block, then install the fuel pump onto the engine block, using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

Install the fuel lines onto the fuel pump, using the flat-head screwdriver. Start the engine and allow it to run for a few minutes.

Tips & Warnings

Never smoke or have an open flame nearby while you're working on the fuel system of a vehicle. If you do, you risk causing a fire and injuring yourself or damaging the vehicle.
