How to Replace the Dimmer Switch on a 1984 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer

The dimmer switch on a 1984 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer is mounted on a bezel behind the steering wheel. This switch dims the instrument cluster lighting, and if it fails, the cluster lighting may not work at all. To fix the issue, the dimmer switch has to be removed from the column so that it can be replaced with a new one. The process should take under 15 minutes to do.

Tools Used: Ratchet and socket, Jack, Jack stands

Replace the Dimmer Switch

Remove the trim panel around the steering column using the Phillips screwdriver. Then pull off the trim panel below the steering column with the Phillips screwdriver and pull that away from the dash.

Unbolt the steering column from the dash on the Blazer with the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket, then lower the column so you can access the dimmer switch.

Remove the screws holding the dimmer switch to the column with the Phillips screwdriver. Unplug the wiring to the switch and take the switch away from the column.

Screw the replacement switch to the column with the Phillips screwdriver, then plug in the wiring to the dimmer switch with your hands. Bolt the steering column to the dash with the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket.

Reinstall the steering column trim panels to the column with the Phillips screwdriver. Reinstall the trim panel below the column with the Phillips screwdriver.
