The ignition switch on the 1986 Mercedes 300E is used with your ignition key to start the car. If your switch stops working for any reason, you can remove it in just a few minutes with your key and a simple tool.
This process does not require tools.
Remove the Ignition Switch
Insert your key into the ignition slot as normal and leave the key in the "Off" position.
Insert a straightened paper clip into the small slot just to the left of the key slot.
Push the clip in all the way and turn the key to the "ACC" position to unlock the key from its spot.
Pull on both the key and the clip to slide the cylinder out easily.
Remove the paper clip before removing the key.
