How to Reset the PCM on a Dodge Durango

The powertrain control module (PCM) in your Dodge Durango is located on the right (passenger side) of the engine compartment. It is the circuit board computer for the SUV designed to withstand extreme temperatures. The components in the engine, transmission, drivetrain and other areas send information to the PCM. If the PCM detects an issue with a component, it triggers the malfunction indicator light to illuminate on the dashboard of the Durango. Dodge technicians often debate as to when and if you even need to reset the PCM.

Step 1 - Open the hood of the Durango.

Step 2 - Locate the battery and remove the black-wired negative terminal from the battery.

Step 3 - Turn the ignition key to the "on/crank" position for 30 seconds, then replace the ignition key to the "off" position.

Step 4 - Reconnect the negative battery terminal and close the hood.

Turn the ignition key until the Durango starts and allow it to idle. Check the dashboard for the malfunction indicator light status.

TIPS: Another way to reset the PCM is to scan and clear any diagnostic trouble codes that have triggered the MIL light. You will need a scan tool or code reader/eraser to perform this; they're not always readily available for everyone. Once you've disconnected the battery and reset the PCM of the Dodge Durango, the PCM will need time to relearn itself and your driving habits. This is where the debate comes to issue. Whether you reset the PCM or not, the PCM is going to relearn on its own anyway. The time it takes to reset and relearn or just replace a component and allow the PCM to relearn on its own is comparable. The only time the PCM should be considered for a reset procedure is when a component that has triggered a diagnostic trouble codes has been replaced or corrected. Otherwise the trouble code will end up re-triggering the MIL light on the dash.
