How to Change the Fuel Pump on a 1989 Ford Escort

A 1989 Ford Escort has an in-tank fuel pump that moves the gasoline from the tank to the fuel injection system at the engine. The fuel pump must maintain constant fuel pressure to the fuel injectors for the Escort to start and run properly. If the pump fails to do that, a range of issues may arise, from no-start scenarios to rough idle and rough running. In the event your 1989 Ford Escort suffers a fuel pump failure, and you have basic automotive repair skill, you can change the fuel pump in a few hours or less.

Tools Used: Battery wrench, Wheel chocks, Floor jack, 2 jack stands, Socket set, Screwdriver, Rag, Rubber mallet

Change the Fuel Pump

Lift the hood, support it on the hood prop rod and disconnect the negative battery cable from the terminal with the battery wrench. Make sure to position the cable end so that it cannot contact the battery during the repair procedure, which may cause a spark that could ignite the fuel vapors.

Place the wheel chocks against the front of the two front tires to prevent the Escort from rolling. Lift the rear of the Escort with the floor jack and support it on the jack stands.

Move the floor jack so that the jack head is resting against the bottom of the fuel tank. Unbolt the fuel tank retaining straps with the socket set.

Lower the fuel tank with the floor jack far enough to access the fuel lines and wiring harness attached to the fuel pump, located at the top of the tank. Disconnect the wiring harness and fuel lines with the screwdriver.

Lower the tank completely and pull it out from under the Escort with the floor jack. Lift the tank of the jack and set it on a clean, level surface.

Wrap the tip of the screwdriver with the rag. Place the tip against the lip of the fuel pump retaining ring and tap the handle with the rubber mallet until the ring rotates counterclockwise. Lift the ring off by hand.

Place the gas tank on the floor jack and roll it under the Escort. Lift the tank high enough to allow you to reconnect the wiring harness and fuel lines in reverse of how you disconnected them.

Lift the tank the rest of the way and bolt the fuel tank retaining straps back in place with the socket set. Lower the Escort off the jack stands with the floor jack and then reconnect the negative battery cable with the battery wrench.
